Ever since she can remember, Jo Ann Muyco has always made music a central part of her life. From singing to piano lessons to dancing, in any shape, form or sound, it has always been her reason for getting up in the morning. During her adolescence, she was marked by her teachers as “the girl who danced in the halls.” She became very passionate about music, but it wasn't until after high school that she realized the beats she used to choreograph were leading her to pursue a career in the audio field.
Unsure of what step to take, Jo Ann knew she wanted to continue her studies in music. When she saw opportunity in her church, she took the risk to commit one year at Relate Ministry College, studying about church ministry with an emphasis on music. There she built her foundation in
song-writing and music theory and was introduced to an applicable way of recording. After one day of being exposed to Pro Tools and Logic, she knew there was nothing else more she wanted to learn. However, because there wasn’t any formal training, she was never able to properly utilize these tools.
With only a few months till graduation, it was then that Jo Ann decided that she really needed to start thinking about her future. Music was the only thing that came to mind, and so she knew that audio school was the best way to go. After getting advice from a few people and doing research on her own, Jo Ann was introduced to The Art Institutes of Vancouver and its sound engineering program.
Attending The Art Institute has only fuelled her to strive further for a career in the audio field. Because of what she has been able to learn from her instructors, as well as her peers, she has been able to take on opportunities at her church as a live sound mixer. Since then, doors have opened up for her to work with other creative individuals and she is excited for what the future might hold.
